Brazil is now in the economic premier league

Biologist and blogger Lee Turnpenny charts the rise of a new economic power

While Brazil consistently tops us in the world football rankings, we perhaps assume that, as a developing country, it couldn't compete with our superior economy. Well, think again. According to the Centre for Economics and Business Research, Brazil has now overtaken the troubled UK into sixth spot in the World Economic League Table.

As one of the "BRIC" group of emerging economies (with Russia, India and China), Brazil's significance was marked last year with a visit by the US President. Although still economic top dog, the US has been usurped by second placed China as Brazil's number one trading partner. Barack Obama thus feels a pressing need to promote US exports and trade with Brazil - an increasingly influential economic and diplomatic player. Brazil has arrived.
